April 5, 2024 Hello Homemaker! Happy Friday! How has your homemaking week been? I've been washing linens, restocking the fridge and resetting the house post-holiday. With lots of sunshine this week I was able to do some line drying, as recommended by Miss Barbara via Brea Spires in last week's Homemaker Portrait. 🥰 The sun will be disappearing midday in my part of the country on Monday as we experience a total eclipse of the sun. People around here are getting a little cray-cray with the prep. Mostly due to the massive number of visitors flooding the Texas Hill Country for viewing. I've got a freezer full of food and enough rice to last till Jesus returns, so I'm good. Are you in the path of the eclipse? Remember, friend, He has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). In this week's newsletter, I am sharing more takeaways, resources and thoughts about our recent Deep Dive into Homemaking Pillar #3, Rhythms and Routines. As promised in my weekly update, I am also sharing my recipe for Pot Roast Vegetable Soup and Homemade Pimento Cheese. And as always I've included some home-inspired art for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy this edition of Homemaker Happy Mail and keep practicing your art of making a home! 💕 Allison |

New Deep Dive I am so excited to finally be talking about the 3rd Pillar of Homemaking, Rhythms and Routines, with my friend and past AoH guest, Leslie Lucadou. We will start with a brief review of the 4 Pillars of Homemaking, then spend some time defining rhythms and routines-talking about the difference between the two and giving some examples of each. Then we look at motivations (or the why) for establishing rhythms and routines, |

contrasting the world’s ideas vs what God has to say about our why. Next we talk about 4 rhythms of christian living; worship, rest, work and play—what those might look like and how we can use homemaking to help and not hinder these rhythms. Finally we end with a few pitfalls to avoid when establishing rhythms and routines. |

I always make a bigger pot roast than we can eat because I love the versatility of leftover roast. Our go-to meals for pot roast leftovers are French dip sandwiches, tacos, beef pot pie and pot roast veggie soup. I generally cook a chuck roast because it has excellent flavor, but you could use any leftover beef pot roast meat for this recipe. Be sure to check out my notes for ideas for changing up the flavor profile making this recipe even more versatile. It's a good one to have in your kitchen tool kit.

Ah, pimento cheese--creamy, chunky, sweet and tangy--you are one of my favorite southern delicacies. If you are not familiar with this delightful spreadable dip, you must become acquainted with a genuine, homemade version, not the stuff congealed into plastic tubs and sold for crazy amounts at the grocery store. Generally, I don't consider myself to be a food snob, but when it comes to pimento cheese, homemade is ALWAYS best. Be sure to use SHARP cheddar cheese! You need that sharp flavor to contrast with the sweet pimentos and bit of sugar.

Rhythms & Routines: Episode Takeaways and Resources Rhythms vs Routines Are Your Homemaking Routines Helping or Hindering Your Family Rhythms? Always Evaluate & Be Flexible: Whether it’s our laundry routine, cleaning routine, Bible study routine, bedtime routine or any other routine, we should always be open to adjustment according to our current season, in ways that facilitate rhythms of worship, work, rest and play in our home.
Fruitfulness over Efficiency: Yes, there is value in working smarter, not harder. Efficiency has its place in homemaking, but our ultimate aim in the running of our home and cultivating a holy home culture is not efficiency it is fruitfulness.
Grow Where God Has You: As believers in Christ we are secure in our identity and called to the purpose of glorifying Him. We are all given a certain amount of raw materials, strengths, values and gifts to work with. The pasture is wide and the options are endless as to how we use those materials in our homemaking to establish good rhythms and routines. So don’t compare to another homemaker’s rhythms and routines or to another season you would rather be in, one that may seem less fraught with interruptions or challenges. Cultivate fruitfulness right now by setting down deep roots in the truth of God’s word and looking for His character on display all around you.
Leave Margin: Beware the temptation to micromanage every single bit of time with routines. Leave space in your days/months/seasons, not just for the unexpected, but for the capacity to hear and see the goodness of God.
COMING THIS SEASON We will continue to unpack this homemaking pillar over the next season here in Homemaker Happy Mail. Starting next week, I will spend some time diving into each of the four rhythms of the Christian life that Leslie and I discussed. Rest: April 12, 2024 Worship: April 19, 2024 Work: April 26, 2024 Play: May 3, 2024 RECOMMENDED RESOURCES RELATED EPISODES CONNECT WITH LESLIE ON INSTAGRAM @leslielucadou |
